In a bold stride toward sustainable transportation, France has activated the world’s first wireless EV-charging road, a 1.5-kilometre stretch near the A10 motorway just outside Paris. Developed by Electreon in partnership with VINCI Autoroutes, and validated by Gustave Eiffel University, the project enables electric vehicles to charge dynamically—while driving—without the need to stop or plug in.
The road is embedded with copper coils beneath the asphalt, which generate a magnetic field. This energy is wirelessly transferred to EVs equipped with compatible receivers, allowing for in-motion charging at speeds typical of highway travel. The system delivers up to 300 kW of power, sufficient to charge passenger cars, buses, and even heavy-duty trucks.
This pilot is part of France’s broader Electric Road System roadmap, which envisions 9,000 km of wireless charging highways by 2030. The initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions, support freight electrification, and eliminate range anxiety for EV users—especially in long-haul transport.
