Ed Sheeran has taken his love for India to a new level with his latest single "Sapphire," where he sings in Punjabi alongside Indian superstar Arijit Singh. The song, released on June 5, is already turning heads for its vibrant mix of cultures and catchy dance vibe.
Key Highlights:
"Sapphire" features Sheeran singing a line in Punjabi during the chorus, which translates to “they sparkle just like stars.” This marks the first time the British singer-songwriter has sung in Punjabi, and fans are loving the cross-cultural experiment.
The track is a collaboration with Arijit Singh, who not only lends his vocals but also plays the sitar. Singh’s contribution adds a distinct Indian flavor to the song.
The music video was shot across multiple locations in India during Sheeran’s recent tour. It captures Sheeran exploring Indian streets, beaches, and landmarks, and even includes a cameo by Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan.
Sheeran said "Sapphire" was the first song he finished for his upcoming album "Play," and it helped define the album’s direction. He completed the recording in Goa, surrounded by Indian musicians.
A full Punjabi version of "Sapphire," featuring more vocals from Arijit Singh, is set to release in the coming weeks.
The single is already being praised for its joyful celebration of Indian culture and Sheeran’s willingness to experiment with new languages and sounds.
