The Maharashtra Mahayuti government has sanctioned Rs 270 crore, allocating Rs 5 crore each to 54 first-time elected MLAs from alliance partners to undertake development projects in their constituencies. This strategic funding aims to bolster the alliance’s prospects in upcoming local elections across multiple municipal bodies scheduled by January 2026.
In a significant move to strengthen its foothold ahead of crucial local body elections, the BJP-led Mahayuti government in Maharashtra has approved over Rs 270 crore in development funds for 54 first-time MLAs from its allied parties. Each legislator will receive Rs 5 crore to facilitate various development projects in their respective constituencies, as per a recent government resolution issued by the State Planning Department.
This allocation comes amid preparations for elections to 29 Municipal Corporations, 247 Municipal Councils, 42 Nagar Panchayats, 32 Zilla Parishads, and 336 Panchayat Samitis, which are scheduled to be held before January 31, 2026, in compliance with a Supreme Court mandate. The ruling alliance, comprising BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, aims to continue its winning streak following the state Assembly polls by securing victories in these local governance bodies.
Previously, the government released funds via the Rural Development Department for Zilla Parishads and the Urban Development Department for municipal corporations and councils, focusing on specialized schemes. However, the latest decision marks a direct focus on first-time MLAs to empower them to address constituency-specific development work, helping solidify their political presence at the grassroots level.
Sources reveal that although there was an initial plan to allocate Rs 10 crore per MLA, financial pressures from welfare schemes such as "Chief Minister Majhi Ladki Bahin" and recent heavy rains and floods have necessitated a reduction to Rs 5 crore each for these new legislators. Meanwhile, other sitting MLAs have petitioned for similar development funds, prompting the government to prepare a separate resolution to allocate Rs 2 to 2.5 crore each to them in the near future to avoid any dissatisfaction.
This proactive financial allocation by the Mahayuti government underscores the strategic emphasis on local governance success, with the alliance building momentum to maintain power across Maharashtra’s vast network of municipal and rural bodies. The move also highlights challenges in balancing developmental budgets amid ongoing welfare commitments and disaster relief expenditures.
