In a landmark move to boost the horticulture sector and streamline the transport of perishable goods, Indian Railways is set to launch its first-ever cherry cargo train from Jammu & Kashmir to Mumbai next month. The inaugural shipment, scheduled for June 3, will see a dedicated parcel van (VP) carrying 24 tons of fresh cherries from Katra railway station to Bandra, Mumbai, marking a significant step in connecting Kashmir’s fruit growers directly with major urban markets.

This initiative follows extensive consultations between the Jammu railway division, the Horticulture Department, and Fruit Grower Associations. The move is expected to reduce the burden on road transport, cut transit time, and ensure that delicate produce like cherries reaches consumers with minimal spoilage, preserving both quality and value.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Northern Railway, Jammu, Uchit Singhal, emphasized the broader impact: “It will be a win-win situation for both railways and fruit growers and, in turn, the economy of the J&K region.” The cherry cargo is expected to reach Mumbai in just 30 hours, a notable improvement over traditional road transport.
