In the 122nd edition of his radio show 'Mann Ki Baat' on May 25, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also highlighted the inspiring tale of Jeevan Joshi, a 65-year-old artist from Haldwani, Uttarakhand. Although polio has been his lifelong companion since childhood, Joshi has turned adversity into art and developed a new craft called 'Baget'—exquisite pieces of art prepared from the parched bark of pine trees. The major highlights of the announcement and the success story of Jeevan Joshi are as follows:
About Jeevan Joshi
Jeevan Joshi is a Haldwani, Uttarakhand resident and talented woodcraft artist.
He also got polio at a young age, but this did not discourage his determination or creativity.
Joshi has spent more than two decades of his life creating and marketing 'Baget' art, which has inspired many with his strength.
What is 'Baget' Art?
'Baget' art is works created using the dry pine tree (cheed) bark, which is a waste material otherwise.
Joshi transforms this bark into beautiful handicrafts, including replicas of Uttarakhand’s temples, traditional musical instruments, and other cultural symbols.
His creations reflect the soul of the hills, local traditions, and a deep connection with nature.
The art is eco-friendly and revives a local cultural heritage that might otherwise be forgotten.
PM Modi’s Words in ‘Mann Ki Baat’
The Prime Minister described Joshi as “a living inspiration” whose name itself means ‘life’—and who truly embodies it.
Modi highlighted how Joshi’s art gives new life to what is usually discarded, turning pine bark into a symbol of Uttarakhand’s cultural legacy.
He praised Joshi’s dedication, noting that every piece is not just art but a form of sadhana (spiritual practice), and that such artists exemplify the spirit of “nothing is impossible”.
Impact and Recognition
Joshi’s work has been recognized by the Ministry of Culture, which awarded him a Senior Fellowship for his contribution to traditional crafts.
He also trains children and young artists, ensuring the survival and growth of this unique folk art.
Local communities believe that with greater support, Joshi’s art could create employment opportunities in the region.
Why is This Story Important?
Jeevan Joshi’s journey is a powerful example of overcoming physical challenges through creativity and perseverance.
His story aligns with India’s ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, emphasizing the importance of indigenous crafts and local talent.
The national spotlight on Joshi through ‘Mann Ki Baat’ is expected to inspire others and bring attention to lesser-known traditional arts.
