India launched the ₹6,839 crore Vibrant Villages Programme-II (VVP-II) to transform border villages distant from the country into secure and vibrant areas of development in the wake of growing Chinese claims. VVP-II aims at over 2,000 villages across 17 states and union territories and intends to strengthen infrastructure, livelihoods, and connectivity along sensitive borders like Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh, and Uttarakhand.
By building all-weather roads, improving telecom and electrification, and promoting rural tourism, VVP-II seeks to pre-empt depopulation-a strategic liability that would weaken India's territorial claim. The programme also brings border populations into national integration, making them the "eyes and ears" of security personnel and imbuing them with a strong national identity.
Village-specific action plans, community events, and technology-driven monitoring ensure tailored, effective implementation. VVP-II’s holistic approach not only boosts security but also empowers border communities, making them resilient sentinels against external threats.
