Chiang Mai has been named the safest city in ASEAN for 2025, according to the latest rankings released by Numbeo, the world’s largest crowdsourced database for quality of life and safety data. With an impressive safety index score of 78.2, Chiang Mai edged out Singapore (77.4) and Davao, Philippines (71.6) to claim the top spot in the region.

Numbeo’s Safety Index is based on public perceptions and personal experiences regarding crime, safety during day and night, and concerns about theft, assault, and vandalism. The data reflects the lived reality of residents and visitors, rather than relying solely on official crime statistics. In Chiang Mai, crime rates are considered very low, with particularly high scores for safety when walking alone during both daylight and nighttime hours.

This recognition comes at a time when Thailand is experiencing a surge in international tourism. From January to early May 2025, the country welcomed nearly 13 million international visitors, generating over 613 billion baht in revenue. The government sees Chiang Mai’s ranking as a testament to Thailand’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety, improve public services, and provide a welcoming environment for both tourists and residents.

Officials are optimistic that this accolade will further boost Thailand’s reputation as a safe and attractive destination, supporting the nation’s ambitious target of 39 million visitors and 3.4 trillion baht in tourism revenue by the end of the year.
