Ghana has just rolled out an ambitious labor export program, and it could be a game-changer for thousands of Ghanaians looking for work. The idea is simple: help skilled and semi-skilled citizens find jobs abroad, and in the process, bring more money back into the country through remittances.
Key Highlights:
-
The program is targeting a wide range of workers, from healthcare professionals to construction workers, farmers, and hospitality staff. The government wants to make sure Ghanaians are well-trained and certified before they head overseas, so they’re setting up rigorous training programs.
-
The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations is leading the charge, working closely with private recruitment agencies and international employers to make sure everything is above board.
-
Ghana is also negotiating with countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia to secure fair wages and good working conditions for its workers. The goal is to make sure people aren’t exploited and have legal protections while they’re abroad.
This isn’t just about jobs—it’s also about fighting unemployment at home and giving people a safer, legal way to work overseas, rather than risking irregular migration.
The government expects that as more Ghanaians work abroad, the money they send back will give a real boost to the local economy.
There’s been a positive response from jobseekers and business leaders, but some are urging the government to keep a close eye on worker welfare and prevent any abuse.
Support services like pre-departure orientation and consular help are also part of the plan, so workers aren’t left on their own.
