NTPC Limited, India’s largest power producer, has officially declared the Commercial Operation Date (COD) for Unit 3 of its Barh Super Thermal Power Project, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s energy infrastructure.
Key Highlights:
The third unit, with a capacity of 660 MW, under Stage-1 of the Barh Super Thermal Power Project in Bihar, has successfully completed all trial operations and regulatory clearances, entering commercial service in June 2025.
This achievement brings the total installed capacity at Barh Stage-1 to 1,980 MW (3x660 MW), further strengthening NTPC’s role in meeting the country’s growing electricity demand.
With the commissioning of Unit 3, NTPC’s standalone installed capacity now stands at 60,926 MW, and the group’s total capacity has reached 82,028 MW.
The operationalization of this unit enhances grid stability and power supply reliability for the region, supporting the government’s vision for robust energy security.
The Barh project employs supercritical coal combustion technology, contributing to improved efficiency and reduced emissions compared to conventional coal-fired plants.
The project’s development faced challenges, including delays in equipment supply due to international sanctions and logistical issues, but NTPC’s proactive measures ensured timely completion.
The successful integration of Unit 3 is expected to positively impact power distribution across Bihar and neighboring states, aligning with NTPC’s strategic expansion and India’s energy transition goals.
This milestone underscores NTPC’s continued commitment to expanding its generation portfolio and supporting India’s sustainable growth trajectory.
