Golden Hour at the Metro: Home Guard’s Rapid Response Reunites Commuter with Valuables

The prompt action of a Bengaluru Metro home guard resulted in the speedy recovery and return of a passenger's lost bag carrying gold, cash, and personal papers at Mahakavi Kuvempu Road Metro station on Friday.

  • A commuter, Nivedita Bhat, left her bag on a bench at Platform 2 by mistake during travel towards Silk Institute on the Green Line.
  • The bag had a nuptial chain (mangalsutra) worth almost ₹2 lakh, more than ₹2,000 in cash, identity proofs, credit and debit cards, and a simple mobile phone.
  • Manjulamma, who is a 40-year-old home guard with four years of experience at BMRCL, saw the abandoned bag at around 12:45 pm and immediately tied it to a pillar.
  • She informed the assistant security officer, who took the issue to the station controller for taking necessary action.
  • BMRCL officials checked the bag and, employing the active feature phone within, retrieved a contact number of Bhat's friend. The friend was reached and told Bhat, and he immediately returned to the station.
  • The whole process, from the bag being discovered to being returned, was completed in under 30 minutes, highlighting the effectiveness of BMRCL's lost-and-found process.
  • BMRCL officials pointed out that bags, jewelry, gadgets, and laptops are some of the most frequently lost items on the Metro system.
  • The home guard, Manjulamma, is from Turuvukere in Tumkur district and has been acknowledged for her vigilance and responsibility.
"Our staff responded quickly and responsibly. The commuter's bag was returned safely within half an hour" A BMRCL spokesperson said.
