India’s formal job sector is showing strong momentum, with the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) reporting a 5.79% increase in new employment registrations for March. A total of 1.63 million workers joined the ESIC network, marking a significant rise from February’s 1.54 million.
The surge in job creation is accompanied by a notable shift in workforce demographics. Nearly half of the newly enrolled employees—around 0.79 million—are aged 25 or younger, reflecting a generational shift in employment trends. Women’s participation remains robust, with 360,000 new female registrations, while transgender employees are also making their presence felt, with 100 new registrations recorded in March.
The ESIC’s expanding reach is further highlighted by a 33.9% increase in establishments joining the network, with 31,514 new entities registering in March compared to 23,526 in February. This uptick signals growing business confidence and a continued push toward formal employment.
Under the ESI Act of 1948, ESIC provides medical care, maternity benefits, unemployment support, and compensation for work-related disabilities or fatalities. Employees earning up to Rs 21,000 per month contribute 0.75% of their wages, while employers contribute 3.25%, ensuring comprehensive social security coverage.
While the numbers are promising, officials caution that payroll data remains provisional due to ongoing updates and late reporting by some establishments. Analysts suggest that sustained focus on youth employability and gender-inclusive policies will be key to maintaining this growth trajectory.
