India is going great guns developing its first locally developed hydrogen-powered train, with a trial planned in March 2025 on the Jind–Sonipat section of the Northern Railway in Haryana. The initiative under the "Hydrogen for Heritage" project includes the retrofitting of green hydrogen fuel cells into existing Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rakes. A fund of ₹111.83 crore has been set aside for the ground infrastructure that is required. The hydrogen engine, which RDSO has designed in Lucknow, has a whopping 1200 horsepower, which is higher than international standards. The project is part of India's overall vision to become energy-independent by 2047 and reach net-zero emissions by 2070.
