India is buzzing with new ideas, from startups in Bengaluru to research labs in Hyderabad. But for all this creativity to really pay off, the country needs a stronger system to protect intellectual property (IP). Here’s why IP support matters and what’s happening on the ground.

What’s Changing:

Patent and trademark filings are on the rise. More Indian inventors and companies are seeing the value in protecting their ideas. Patent applications have nearly tripled in the last decade, and trademark filings are close to half a million every year.

Policies like the National IPR Policy and programs such as Startup India are encouraging innovation. The government has also made it easier and faster to file for patents, which helps both local and foreign investors feel more confident about putting money into Indian ideas.

Where the Challenges Lie:

While big companies are making good use of IP laws, many startups and small businesses still find the process complicated and expensive. They need more support—like training, simpler procedures, and local help centers—to really benefit.

There’s also a backlog in examining and enforcing patents. India doesn’t have enough patent examiners, which means long waits for approvals. Experts say hiring more examiners and using better digital tools would help a lot.

Why It Matters:

Good IP protection attracts investors and helps startups grow, especially in tech, biotech, and creative fields. Companies like Flipkart and Bharat Biotech have used strong IP portfolios to build global reputations.

For India to compete globally, it’s not just about filing more patents. The focus should be on turning those patents into real products and businesses.

Building a better IP system is key if India wants to turn its innovation boom into long-term success.
