Kota, Rajasthan, has become the first Indian city to operate entirely without traffic signals by redesigning its road network with flyovers, underpasses, ring roads, and roundabouts. This innovative urban planning reduces travel time, fuel consumption, accidents, and pollution, setting a new benchmark for sustainable city mobility.
Kota, known as the coaching hub of India, has achieved a pioneering milestone in urban mobility by becoming the country’s first completely traffic light-free city. Spearheaded by the Urban Improvement Trust (UIT), Kota undertook a large-scale infrastructure revamp involving the construction of over 24 flyovers and underpasses, road widening, and installation of clear lane markings and signage.
This traffic-light-free model emphasizes “conflict-free” road design, where traffic flow is continuous without ever having to stop at red lights. Ring roads divert vehicles around congested inner areas, while rotaries and one-way corridors ensure smooth intersections. With minimal traffic police involvement during peak hours, the system relies heavily on driver discipline and road design.
The project, which took nearly three years and involved ₹250 crore investment, has dramatically cut travel times, fuel wastage, noise pollution, and accidents. It has received praise from industry leaders like Anand Mahindra and is held as a model of smart city traffic management that other Indian cities can emulate for sustainable urban development.
