Maruti Suzuki Opens India’s Largest Automobile Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal At Manesar

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has inaugurated the country’s largest automobile multi-modal cargo terminal at its Manesar plant, marking a significant milestone in India’s logistics infrastructure. The facility, developed under the Gati Shakti initiative, is expected to streamline automobile transportation and enhance efficiency in vehicle dispatch operations.  

Key Features Of The Cargo Terminal  

- The terminal is connected to Patli railway station via a dedicated 10-km rail link, forming part of the 121.7-km Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor  
- The project was developed at a total cost of Rs 800 crore, with Rs 684 crore contributed by the Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation and the remaining amount funded by Maruti Suzuki  
- The facility has an annual vehicle loading capacity of 4.5 lakh units, making it the highest-capacity automobile cargo terminal in India  
- Spread across 46 acres, the terminal includes four full-length tracks for rakes and one engine escape line, with a total track length of 8.2 km  

Strategic Importance And Industry Impact  

- The terminal is expected to significantly reduce transportation costs and transit times for Maruti Suzuki, improving supply chain efficiency  
- It aligns with India’s broader push for green logistics, reducing reliance on road transport and lowering carbon emissions  
- The facility will support the dispatch of vehicles to 17 hubs across 380 cities in India, as well as export terminals like Mundra and Pipavav  
- The initiative is part of Maruti Suzuki’s long-term strategy to increase rail-based vehicle dispatches to 35 percent by FY2030-31  

Government Support And Infrastructure Development  

- Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the terminal, highlighting the transformation in Indian Railways over the past decade  
- The minister announced plans to upgrade over 100 MEMU trains and expand the Amrit Bharat Express fleet to meet rising passenger demand  
- Haryana’s railway budget allocation has increased from Rs 300 crore in 2014 to Rs 3,416 crore in 2024, supporting infrastructure projects across the state
