Ahead of Australia's May 2025 federal election, Meta Platforms has revealed a thorough plan to counteract disinformation and AI-generated deepfakes. Meta seeks to identify, flag, and down-rank deceptive content on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads by working with fact-checkers such as Agence France-Presse (AFP) and the Australian Associated Press (AAP). Anything that could endanger voter safety or interfere with the election process will be completely eliminated. In order to combat deepfakes, Meta will label AI-generated content as "altered" and promote openness among users who share it. Additionally, voter empowerment tools will provide verified election information, with reminders rolling out across platforms a week before the election. Although Meta's efforts are in line with its global election strategies, the effectiveness of its enforcement is being questioned in light of Australia's growing regulatory challenges.
