Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become the first Indian PM in 30 years to visit Ghana, kicking off his five-nation tour with a ceremonial welcome that included a Guard of Honour and a 21-gun salute at Kotoka International Airport in Accra on July 2, 2025. Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama personally received Modi, underscoring the significance of the visit.

Modi’s two-day stay aims to deepen India-Ghana ties across investment, energy, health, security, and capacity building. He described Ghana as a “valued friend in the Global South” and expressed eagerness to address the Parliament of Ghana on July 3, marking another first for an Indian leader.

The Prime Minister was greeted by enthusiastic members of the Indian diaspora, who welcomed him with chants and cultural performances. At his hotel, children performed a devotional chant of “Hare Rama Hare Krishna,” adding a spiritual touch to the diplomatic occasion.

In a symbolic gesture, Ghana conferred upon Modi its highest civilian honour—The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana—recognizing his global leadership and commitment to bilateral friendship. Modi dedicated the award to the youth of both nations and their shared democratic values.

This visit sets the tone for India’s expanding engagement with African Union and ECOWAS nations, reinforcing its strategic footprint in West Africa ahead of Modi’s next stops in Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia.
