UK India Business Council (UKIBC) welcomed the resumption of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the UK after eight months of lull. The negotiations, led by UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds and Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, resumed in New Delhi on February 24, 2025. The FTA aims to address the pressing issues of tariff cuts, digital trade, intellectual property rights, and visa regimes.
Richard Heald, UKIBC Chair, emphasized the importance of this deal in further boosting the bilateral trade, which reached £42 billion in 2024. He further said that this agreement could unlock significant opportunities for businesses and resonate with India's vision of Viksit Bharat@2047.
Both countries are hopeful of resolving pending issues and agreeing on a mutually advantageous trade agreement in the near future, a milestone in their strategic economic alliance.
