The Punjab Kings have introduced their newest talent in the Indian Premier League: Australian all-round sensation Mitchell Owen, a 23-year-old six-hitting sensation from Tasmania, who made his much-awaited IPL debut against the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday. Owen, acquired as an injury replacement for Glenn Maxwell, offers explosive batting credentials and an expanding reputation as one of T20 cricket's most thrilling prospects.
Who is Mitchell Owen?
Mitchell Owen is an exciting all-rounder who emerged in the 2024–25 Big Bash League (BBL) season playing for the Hobart Hurricanes. He blasted 452 runs in 11 games at a scorching strike rate of 203.60, with two centuries. His defining moment was in the BBL title game, when he crushed 108 off only 42 balls, tying the record for the quickest century in BBL history (39 balls) and leading his side to their first title. Owen's 11 sixes in that final also equaled the record for the most sixes in a single BBL campaign (36).
Prior to signing for the IPL, Owen also played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for Peshawar Zalmi and the SA20 for Paarl Royals, adding more evidence of his aggressive approach to batting and adaptability.
