Indian Railways is managing to pay its bills from its own revenue, according to Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the Rajya Sabha. In the fiscal year 2023-24, the railways earned a revenue of around Rs 2,78,000 crore against expenditure of Rs 2,75,000 crore. Vaishnaw pointed out that even with the pandemic posing challenges, both passenger and freight traffic have grown considerably. The minister stressed that Indian train ticket prices continue to be the lowest compared to neighboring countries and that huge passenger subsidies exist. Ongoing efforts are being introduced to further improve financial health.
