Persistent heavy rains have led to schools being shut in parts of Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and other regions today, August 14, 2025. Authorities say the decision was taken to keep students safe and to avoid travel disruptions caused by flooding and waterlogged roads.
What’s Happening in Telangana
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts predicting very heavy to extremely heavy showers. Schools in Warangal, Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Mahabubabad, and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri will remain closed for the day.
In Hyderabad, classes are running for only half the day within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation area. Students are being sent home before midday to avoid the worst of the afternoon rain.
Updates from Uttar Pradesh
In Lucknow, all government and private schools from Class 1 to 12 are closed today. Similar orders are in place in Varanasi and Moradabad, where heavy rain has combined with traffic restrictions linked to the Chehlum observance. Flooded streets and poor transport conditions pushed district authorities to declare the holiday.
Delhi-NCR and Himachal Pradesh
Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram are on alert as the IMD forecasts more heavy showers, although no closures have been officially announced. Parents are being told to monitor conditions closely before sending children to school.
In Himachal Pradesh, destructive rains and flash floods have damaged roads and bridges, especially in Lahaul-Spiti and Shimla, making travel difficult. Even though schools haven’t formally shut, many students cannot attend due to cut-off routes.
Other States Under Watch
Parts of Punjab, Haryana, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Madhya Pradesh are on orange or red alerts for rain. Local authorities in these areas have the discretion to shut schools if needed.
Quick Reference: Where Schools Are Closed Today
Telangana – Warangal, Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Mahabubabad, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri (full-day holiday); Hyderabad GHMC area (half-day)

Safety Tips for Students and Parents
Check official school notices or local government updates before heading out.
Avoid unnecessary travel in flooded or low-lying areas.
If children must go out, ensure they’re properly equipped for wet conditions.
Keep local emergency numbers handy.
Looking Ahead
The IMD says the current monsoon pattern will persist for a few more days. Given the national holiday tomorrow for Independence Day, many schools will only resume regular schedules next week, depending on the weather.
