India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has announced a major breakthrough with five new oil and gas discoveries across its flagship offshore basins, marking a significant leap in the nation’s quest for energy self-sufficiency. These “play-opening” finds, revealed in ONGC’s latest financial update, are poised to boost domestic production and attract global investment.
Key Highlights:
Five New Discoveries: Since May 2024, ONGC has made three additional discoveries—one onshore and two offshore—bringing the total to five in FY25. These include the PURN-1 well in Gujarat, West Matar-2 in the Gandhar field, and the Chandramani (B-56-B) well in the Tapti-Daman offshore area.
Mumbai Offshore Success: The Chandramani (B-56-B) well in the C-Series, off Mumbai’s coast, confirmed commercial oil and gas in the Diu Formation for the first time, opening a new exploration corridor in the region.
Expanding Frontiers: The PURN-1 and West Matar-2 wells have established new oil and gas pools in Gujarat, unlocking fresh exploration potential in the Olpad, Kadi, and Hazad formations.
Boost to Energy Security: These discoveries arrive as India aims to raise the share of natural gas in its energy mix to 15% by 2030. ONGC’s continued success is crucial for reducing the nation’s reliance on energy imports.
Strategic Partnerships: ONGC’s exploration drive is supported by collaborations with global giants like TotalEnergies and ExxonMobil, with joint ventures targeting deepwater blocks in the Mahanadi, Andaman, and Krishna Godavari basins.
Future Plans: ONGC is ramping up investment in seismic surveys and exploratory drilling, with plans to drill six wells in the Andaman Basin and expand its offshore footprint across India’s east and west coasts.
These discoveries not only reinforce ONGC’s leadership in India’s upstream sector but also promise to reshape the country’s energy landscape for years to come.
