With tensions running high on India's borders, the government has instituted a mass crackdown on the sale of walkie-talkies on unauthorized lines through major e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, OLX, and others. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) sent formal notices to 13 online marketplaces, revealing hundreds of listings that flout key licensing and regulatory norms.
Key Highlights:
The CCPA's move comes against the backdrop of apprehensions that non-compliant wireless devices would create serious national security threats, particularly in the context of increasing India-Pakistan tensions and operation Sindoor.
Platforms were seen advertising walkie-talkies without requisite information on frequency range, licensing status, or Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) Wing Equipment Type Approval (ETA).
Initial checks saw a staggering number of non-compliant listings: 467 on Amazon, 314 on Flipkart, 489 on Meesho, and 423 on TradeIndia, among many others.
These include violations of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, Indian Telegraph Act, and Wireless Telegraphy Act, that can mislead consumers into thinking these gadgets are freely usable.
The CCPA has required detailed information from platforms, such as seller details, product URLs, frequency specs, ETA certification, and sales data going back to January 2023.
New draft regulations will shortly require more rigorous due diligence, verification of sellers, and quick removal of illicit listings, with liability and fines imposed on platforms that fail to comply.
E-commerce businesses have been instructed to delist non-compliant products with immediate effect and ensure all new listings conform to regulatory requirements.
This bold step is meant to safeguard consumers, ensure national security, and instill confidence in India's vibrant digital marketplaces.
