Kerala is bracing for intense monsoon showers as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for five northern districts—Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod—warning of extremely heavy rainfall from June 14 to 17. The alert follows the formation of a cyclonic circulation over northern Karnataka and Telangana–Rayalaseema, coupled with strong westerly winds sweeping across the state.
Key Highlights:
Red Alert Districts: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod are under red alert, indicating a high likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall (over 20 cm in 24 hours).
Orange and Yellow Alerts: Orange alerts, denoting very heavy rainfall, have been sounded for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha are under yellow alert for isolated heavy showers.
Wind Warnings: Squally winds with speeds up to 50–60 kmph are expected across Kerala, prompting advisories for fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea.
Hazard Risks: Authorities warn of possible flash floods, waterlogging in low-lying and urban areas, and landslides in hilly regions due to the high intensity of rainfall over short durations.
School Closures: District Collectors in Kannur and Kasaragod have declared holidays for all educational institutions on June 14 and 15.
Public Advisory: Residents are urged to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and strictly follow official safety guidelines during this period of adverse weather.
Monsoon Update: After an early onset and a brief lull, the southwest monsoon has revived, with rainfall activity expected to intensify further in the coming days.
The IMD continues to monitor the evolving situation, with district-wise alerts updated daily to ensure public safety.
