India is at the vanguard of innovation in the world as it commemorates National Technology Day 2025, a celebration of the country's inspiring journey from scientific achievements to technological supremacy. This year's celebrations, observed on May 11, are centered around the theme YANTRA – Yugantar for Advancing New Technology, Research and Acceleration, launched by the Technology Development Board under the Department of Science and Technology. YANTRA, based on the country's scientific legacy, is not only machines but the potential of systems, collaboration, and scalable solutions. The word Yugantar represents a change of paradigm, indicative of India's transition from a technology adopter to a world technology leader.
National Technology Day marks the historic milestones of May 11, 1998, when India successfully tested nuclear weapons at Pokhran during Operation Shakti and saw the first flight of the indigenously built Hansa-3 aircraft. Established by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the day celebrates the ethos of scientific curiosity, perseverance, and ingenuity that continues to define India's technological prowess.
The celebrations in 2025 unite policymakers, scientists, technocrats, industrialists, academics, and entrepreneurs. Acceleration of growth of India in the areas of deep-tech, precision engineering, and revolutionary R&D is in the spotlight. Convergent ideas revolve around leveraging infrastructure and digital evolution for creating developed India, or Viksit Bharat, focusing extra attention on giving power to the country's youth as tech leaders of tomorrow. Cyber resilience and artificial intelligence-driven cyber defense leadership are identified as key to a secure digital future.
India's advance in the last year is proof of its emergence as a tech hub globally. Some of its major developments in the field have been in the areas of quantum technology, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, clean energy, water technology, space, and the bioeconomy. Strategic alliances with international tech players for developing chips for AI, the rollout of 5G networks, and the establishment of 6G research efforts show India's intentions to pursue self-reliance in technology as well as empower itself digitally.
National Technology Day is celebrated with award functions honoring excellent innovators, seminars and webinars on cutting-edge technologies, science exhibitions, technology demonstrations, and educational campaigns to motivate the next generation. The day acts as a forceful reminder of India's scientific prowess, its aspiration for sustainable and inclusive growth, and its willingness to solve global challenges using technology.
As India marks National Technology Day 2025, the country not only celebrates its history of success but also looks to a future of innovation, sustainability, and leadership in science and technology on the world stage.
