Air India was the UK's worst-performing airline for delays, with flights departing on average nearly 46 minutes behind schedule in 2024, a blistering new report from the UK's Civil Aviation Authority reveals. This figure places Air India lowest among major carriers from UK airports, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and infuriated as stories of lost connections and long airport holdups flood social media. The airline's UK operations covering flights from Heathrow, Gatwick, and Birmingham to Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru have seen delays more than double the UK average of 18 minutes per flight.

These ongoing delays are partially to blame by industry experts on ongoing operational concerns such as fleet maintenance problems and the unavailability of spare parts, all of which have not improved since the Tata Group takeover and rebranding campaigns. While Air India has increased 56% more UK flights since 2019, its passengers continue to endure unpredictable service, while the airline itself boasts about its new Airbus A350 first-class experience.

UK legislation offers delayed flyers compensation of up to £520 should the delay be within the control of the airline, and Air India has promised changes, citing recent on-time performance improvements in early 2025. But with rising global scrutiny, Air India finds itself under enormous pressure to get its operational reliability in line with its aspirational premium ambitions.
