The Government of West Bengal has announced a historic move to augment eco-tourism and awareness of biodiversity by initiating an open-air butterfly garden at the legendary Alipore Zoo in Kolkata.
The project will turn the old zoo—India's oldest, founded in 1876—into a vibrant focal point for nature enthusiasts, family visitors, and students, augmenting its status as a premier city green space.
The butterfly garden will feature a variety of native butterfly species, providing a living laboratory for conservation, research, and education.
Travelers will see the magical life cycle of butterflies up close, from caterpillar to chrysalis to flying beauty, in a naturalistic habitat that will attract and support these pollinators.
The project is motivated by the success of other butterfly conservatories in West Bengal, like Banabitan, Eco Park, and Rajabhatkhawa, which are now popular attractions and models for conservation.
The garden will also include host and nectar plants, ponds, and educational exhibits, facilitating hands-on learning and citizen science across all age groups.
By creating butterfly habitats, the project will promote an extended ecosystem, drawing birds, insects, and small mammals, thereby enhancing urban biodiversity.
The butterfly garden has the potential to generate substantial foot traffic, promoting local livelihoods, and establishing Kolkata as a leader in sustainable, nature-based tourism.
The state government action comes in line with international trends in conservation in urban areas with a view to promoting a new generation's understanding and conservation of the natural world.
The project is one of a larger series of improvements at Alipore Zoo that is a sign of a commitment to animal welfare, environmental education, and community outreach.
