As part of a wider effort to combat illegal immigration, the US State Department has imposed visa restrictions on Indian travel agents' owners, executives, and senior officials who are determined to be knowingly facilitating illegal migration to the United States. Announced on May 19, the policy is designed to disrupt human smuggling networks and hold accountable individuals who are aiding illegal entry. The restrictions apply globally, even to individuals who would otherwise qualify for the US Visa Waiver Program.
US officials stated that Mission India's security and consular units are working to actively target and pursue individuals involved in human trafficking and illegal immigration. The US Embassy in New Delhi also cautioned Indian travelers against visa overstaying, stating that the offenses may result in deportation and a lifelong ban on US entry. The clampdown follows deportations of Indian nationals from the US, which witnessed an increase in recent years.
