NGT Raises Alarm Over High Faecal Bacteria Levels in Ganga During Maha Kumbh

National Green Tribunal (NGT) has flagged the high level of faecal coliform bacteria in the Ganga at Prayagraj during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) report indicated that water quality at monitored points failed to satisfy bathing water standards because faecal coliform levels exceeded the safety threshold of 2,500 units per 100 ml. Remarkably, on January 20, readings reached a level of 49,000 at the Sangam. NGT has even summoned officials of the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) to a hearing scheduled for February 19, considering the urgency of the hour in addressing sewage discharge into the rivers. There are increasing concerns about health risks for millions of pilgrims visiting the religious event, as exposure to contaminated water may lead to serious illnesses.
