Copra and Coconut Shortage: Prices of copra, the raw material for coconut oil, have soared by 40%-50% over the past year. This has forced major brands like Marico and Dabur to hike coconut oil prices by up to 30% in the last 12 months. Retail prices in Kerala, India’s coconut hub, have hit a record ₹360 per litre, surpassing all previous highs.

Climate Change & Weather Woes: Unpredictable rain and lingering effects of El Niño lowered coconut yields in leading producers such as the Philippines, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, which collectively produce the majority of the globe's coconut oil. India's own output hasn't been able to keep pace with this, even with a small output improvement this year.

Import Restrictions & Supply Shortage: India's stringent import restrictions imply that only government-approved agencies can import coconut oil, leading to a bottleneck. Trade associations are now seeking the government to ease these restrictions to bridge the widening supply-demand gap.

Surge in Demand: Indian per capita consumption of coconut oil has increased threefold since 2001 to 25 kg per capita currently. The demand for tender coconuts and value-added coconut products during peak summer further tightens supplies.

Global Price Rally: International coconut oil prices have doubled over the past year, with benchmark prices reaching $2,800 a tonne as of May 2025. This international rally is translating directly into Indian retail prices.

Industry Response: To soften the blow for consumers, firms are launching smaller pack sizes rather than yet another price increase. But relief may be short-lived with raw material shortages and worldwide competition for coconuts (particularly from China).
