ONGC Videsh Resumes Mozambique LNG Project As Force Majeure Officially Lifted

Mozambique LNG revival marks key milestone for ONGC’s global energy ambitions  
ONGC Videsh Ltd, the overseas arm of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), confirmed the lifting of force majeure at the Area 1 Mozambique LNG project. The declaration, in place since April 2021 due to militant unrest in the Cabo Delgado province, had stalled progress on the $21 billion liquefied natural gas initiative.

With security conditions now stabilized, the consortium—led by TotalEnergies SE—has notified the Government of Mozambique and resumed construction. ONGC Videsh holds a 16% stake in the project through its subsidiaries, alongside other Indian partners including BPCL and Oil India, collectively owning 30%.

The restart is expected to accelerate infrastructure development and position Mozambique as a key LNG exporter by 2029, with India playing a pivotal role in the supply chain.
