Pratap Sarnaik’s AI-Powered E-Bus: Smarter, Greener, and Ready to Roll

Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik inaugurated the state's new mass transport innovation—the AI-based 'Smart e-Bus.' With the objective of enhancing passenger safety and promoting sustainable mobility, these e-buses will be part of the fleet of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) or MSRTC fleet.

Advanced AI-Directed Safety Features

The buses will be equipped with AI-directed CCTV cameras that will monitor driver behavior, detecting fatigue or mobile phone usage.

Automated alert systems will warn drivers and passengers when they are indulging in dangerous driving habits.

Increased surveillance cameras will keep an eye on passenger behavior, with a special focus on women's safety.

Government's Long-Term Vision

Maharashtra will introduce 1,000 electric buses annually as part of its broader plan to introduce 5,000 self-owned buses.

The MSRTC intends to phase out the present aging buses over the next ten years and introduce AI-driven electric buses.

The initiative is in accordance with the state's efforts to promote electric vehicles and make transport infrastructure more streamlined.

Emergency Response and Safety Improvements

Foam fire-fighting systems will be installed to deal with cases of fires efficiently.

Anti-tamper devices will prevent unauthorized individuals from accessing stand-your-bus, which will trigger an alarm on interference.

The MSRTC is prioritizing cleanliness and safety at all transportation hubs.

Financial and Operating Overhaul

Despite MSRTC's total losses of ₹11,000 crore, the government is not eager to make big-ticket changes.

A white paper will map out the causes and cures for fiscal rebirth.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has promised continued financial aid towards transport sector reforms.
