Rapido Puts the Brakes on Tipping, Accelerates Transparent Pricing

In a strong refutation of recent criticism for prepayment tipping on ride-hailing services, Rapido co-founder Aravind Sanka is clear that the service does not include tipping but gives consumers price control—a move that places Rapido ahead of other players in the industry.

No Tipping Policy: Rapido does not allow or encourage tipping, specifically advance tipping, which customers as well as regulators have criticized as "unethical and exploitative." Rapido rather focuses on fare transparency and customer option.

Flexible Pricing Option: Passengers are able to negotiate the fare—reduced or increased—before booking a ride. This decrease is not a gratuity but an option for bargaining that gives consumers and drivers autonomy over establishing a price both parties can accept. Riders can either accept or reject the proposal, as both parties are covered by fairness.

Transparent SaaS Model: Rather than commission-practice competitors, Rapido operates on a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model and takes subscription fees from drivers and lets the whole fare to them. This removes surprise expenses and aligns incentives.

Regulatory Clarity: Rapido claimed that they have not yet received any notice from the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), who have actioned other platforms like Uber on the matter of advance tipping.

Customer Experience: While some consumers enjoy the opportunity to negotiate, others have reported feeling pressured to hike prices when drivers deny initial offers, and issues have been raised regarding continuous haggling and user unease.

Industry Perspective: Sanka highlighted that the price flexibility is customer choice, not pushing the user to pay more for faster service. The add-on is not imposed on the user, and customers always get the option to stick with the price advertised or cancel if not satisfied.
