Growing discord among global CEOs reflects varying opinions on the employment impact of generative AI (GenAI). While some CEOs, like DBS Group Chief Executive Piyush Gupta, predict significant headcounts to fall—e.g., cutting the bank's staff by 10% within three years—others see AI as one that will augment but not replace human jobs. Gupta highlighted that unlike past technology shifts, GenAI is making it difficult to create new employment opportunities, requesting workers to upskill in areas like data science and cybersecurity in a bid to stay competitive.

At the same time, executives such as Klarna's Sebastian Siemiatkowski predict AI evolving to carry out even executive tasks, provoking existential questions about leadership. A recent survey showed that almost half of CEOs think AI might replace their jobs in the future.

This split decision underscores the necessity for businesses to balance workforce development with automation in order to mitigate disruption.
