Seabird Breeding Colonies Discovered on Adam's Bridge Sandbars

In a remarkable discovery, researchers have identified breeding colonies of six seabird species on the unique sandbars of Adam's Bridge, also known as Ram Setu, in the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve. This finding, made in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, highlights the ecological significance of this marine ecosystem.
The seabird species include the Brown Noddy, Bridled Tern, Saunder’s Tern, Little Tern, Greater Crested Tern, and Roseate Tern. Notably, the Brown Noddy's breeding colony on Sandbar VII marks the first confirmed nesting of this species along India's southeastern coast. These sandbars, largely undisturbed due to restricted access, provide a safe haven for these birds.
However, the discovery also raises concerns about threats such as poaching, pollution, and habitat disturbance. Conservationists emphasize the need for enhanced protection measures to preserve this critical habitat and its avian inhabitants.
