Shell Shock: 405 Turtles Rescued from Slow-Moving Smuggling Ring

It's a major hit for wildlife smuggling as Uttar Pradesh authorities confiscated 405 endangered turtles and detained two smugglers on Saturday. The raid, led by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) and the Special Task Force (STF), was conducted in the Etawah district. The impounded turtles are Indian Flapshell Turtles, which fall under the cover of the Wildlife Protection Act. Authorities suspect that the turtles were bound for foreign markets, where they are worth a lot of money as exotic pets and for their perceived medicinal values. The seizure underscores the persisting difficulty of fighting wildlife crime in India and the urgent necessity of sustained vigilance and enforcement action to safeguard threatened species.
