Singapore’s Ruling Party Secures Sweeping Victory in General Elections

Singapore’s People’s Action Party has extended its uninterrupted 66-year rule with a decisive win in the general elections. The party secured 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats and captured 65.6 percent of the popular vote, reinforcing Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s leadership in his first electoral test since taking office.  

Election Outcome and Political Landscape  

The results mark a significant swing in support for the ruling party, which had seen its vote share drop to 61.2 percent in the 2020 elections. Voters backed the party amid economic uncertainties and regional instability, delivering early wins in key battlegrounds such as Punggol GRC, Tampines GRC, and Jalan Kayu SMC.  

Prime Minister Wong described the victory as deeply humbling and a clear signal of trust, stability, and confidence from Singaporeans. He acknowledged that voters also wanted more alternative voices in government but emphasized that the strong mandate would allow Singapore to navigate global challenges effectively.  

Opposition Performance and Future Prospects  

Despite retaining its 10 seats, the opposition Workers’ Party faced setbacks in several constituencies. The ruling party won more than two-thirds of the vote in 18 of 33 contested races, solidifying its dominance. Workers’ Party leader Pritam Singh assured supporters that efforts to achieve a more balanced parliament would continue.  

Economic and Governance Priorities  

Prime Minister Wong’s immediate focus will be forming a new Cabinet, with key ministers returning to Parliament. He pledged to address rising living costs and housing concerns while steering Singapore through potential economic turbulence. The government’s strategy will center on maintaining stability and ensuring long-term prosperity for the city-state.
