Sowing Verses, Growing Revolt: Celebrating Kazi Nazrul Islam’s 126th Birth Anniversary — The Poet Who Planted Seeds of Rebellion and Bloomed Green Legacy

Across Bangladesh, people are celebrating the 126th birth anniversary of our national poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam, with lively tributes and a renewed promise to carry on his legacy—much like planting seeds that will bloom into inspiration for future generations. From the solemn procession at Dhaka University and the wreath-laying at the poet’s mausoleum to various cultural programs and seminars, these celebrations pay homage to Nazrul’s lasting impact as the “poet of equality, rebellion, love, and peace.”

 

This year’s events hold special significance, as it marks the government’s first official gazette recognizing Nazrul as the national poet. Under the theme “Mass Uprising of the 24: Inheritance of Kazi Nazrul,” a three-day series of activities in Cumilla and across the country showcase how Nazrul’s passionate words continue to fuel resistance against injustice, communalism, and oppression. With lectures, performances of Nazrul Giti, and the esteemed Nazrul Awards, we are reminded of his profound influence on Bengali culture and democratic movements.

 

Speakers and cultural leaders emphasized the importance of viewing Nazrul’s works as seeds for a fair, inclusive, and compassionate society—encouraging the younger generation to “stand against oppression and promote solidarity” by embracing the poet’s timeless vision. As saplings are planted and songs are sung, the nation reaffirms that Nazrul’s legacy, much like a thriving tree, will continue to provide shelter and inspiration for many years to come.
