The Railway Rescue Plan: How Private Sector Can Revive the Ailing Giant

Indian Railways is confronted with serious financial difficulties, such as a high operating ratio and heavy revenue losses, especially in the passenger segment. A Parliamentary Committee has asked the Railways to raise passenger revenues and look into private sector participation to make operations more efficient and competitive. Despite attempts to modernize the infrastructure and increase freight revenues, the Railways still struggle with high operational expenses and passenger fare subsidies. Private sector participation would ease these pressures by enhancing efficiency in operations and lessening dependence on government finance.
