US Pulls the Plug: Global Coal Transition in Jeopardy

The United States is pulling out of the JETP, a scheme to assist developing nations in switching from coal to cleaner sources of energy. The move targets deals with South Africa, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Senegal. It is following President Donald Trump's return to power in January, which has seen large cuts in overseas aid and a changed focus towards encouraging fossil fuel expansion. In spite of the US withdrawal, other donor nations are still committed to the program. Germany has already filled the gap to co-lead Indonesia's JETP with Japan, and the International Partners Group is striving to have the remaining $45 billion in funding commitments fulfilled.
