Water You Waiting For? Janakpuri's Getting a Pipe Dream Makeover

Overview
The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has declared a huge infrastructure overhaul in Janakpuri, which will replace old water and sewer pipes that have caused contamination problems. This follows after a study showed that almost 30% of water samples analyzed in the A Block area of Janakpuri had dangerous bacteria, leading to intervention by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). 

Urgent Repairs and Long-Term Solutions
DJB has informed the NGT that repair of peripheral sewer lines is already in progress and will be done by June 30.

The old pipelines, more than 40 years old, have rusted, causing sewage to mix with drinking water.

To fix the problem once and for all, DJB will replace water and sewer lines in the affected area after getting budgetary sanctions.

Health and Safety Concerns
A study by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) confirmed the presence of E. coli and faecal coliform in drinking water samples of several homes.

Residents had lodged complaints of stinking and visibly contaminated water, which had raised suspicions of possible health hazards.

NGT had earlier taken potshots at DJB for inaction over the problem, threatening severe action if the contamination continues.

Timeline and Execution Plan
Repair of peripheral sewer lines will be done by June 30.

Installation of the new pipelines will start after the monsoon season and is likely to take six months.

Water sampling on June 30 will be done and the results will be filed before the next NGT hearing on July 16.

Advisory for Residents
Residents are requested to boil drinking water and use water purifiers until the new pipelines are installed.

DJB has confirmed that none of the households will be supplied with contaminated water after repairs are done.

The tribunal has ordered the officials to provide clean drinking water unhindered through alternative means if necessary.
