WHO Introduces PRET Initiative to Strengthen Global Pandemic Preparedness

The World Health Organization (WHO) has introduced the Preparedness and Resilience for Emerging Threats (PRET) Initiative to improve global preparedness for upcoming pandemics. The new strategy promotes composite planning for respiratory pathogens, one step ahead of disease-specific approaches. PRET prioritizes collaboration across sectors, engagement with communities, and equity in preparation efforts. The program seeks to enhance national, regional, and global capacities for early detection, rapid response, and effective containment of possible outbreaks. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the need for multi-sector engagement and ongoing learning from previous experiences to end the cycle of panic and neglect in pandemic preparedness.
