Will Reducing Air Pollution Be the Key to Unlocking Higher GDP Growth?

Air pollution is a major threat to sustainable economic growth, with labor productivity, healthcare expenses, and agricultural output affected. The World Bank calculates that air pollution drains the global economy by $8.1 trillion in lost labor income each year.

With worsening air quality, workers' health declines and absenteeism rises, while efficiency declines. Medical expenses skyrocket as diseases from pollution are on the rise, taking healthcare resources away from economic development programs. Crop productivity also reduces, impacting food security and economic stability.

There are, however, some regions that have decoupled economic growth from air pollution. There are clean air programs in nations such as Sweden and Japan, which illustrate the potential for economic continuation alongside better air quality.

The problem of air pollution is important for the attainment of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals since it impacts health, sustainable cities, and climate action. Neglecting it risks undermining progress across several SDGs.

Combating air pollution is now imperative since the world faces climate change and environmental degradation. It is not only an environmental problem but an economic one with deep roots demanding urgent attention by policymakers, firms, and citizens.
