Wings of Power: How Bengaluru's Second Airport Became a Political Battleground

The state government of Karnataka has shortlisted three possible sites for Bengaluru's second international airport and has sent the proposals to the central government for clearance. The possible sites are Bidadi on the Mysuru Road, Harohalli on the Kanakapura Road, and Solur between Nelamangala and Kunigal. Infrastructure Minister M.B. Patil stated that the choice would be on merit, with factors like availability of land, viability of the investor, and long-term advantages to the state being taken into account. The new airport is expected to service 100 million passengers a year and will need 4,500 to 5,000 acres of land. The state government is accelerating the process so that neighboring Tamil Nadu does not take advantage of Bengaluru's increasing air traffic demand.
