A Return Based on Restoration

Lotus disappeared from Wular Lake after the devastating floods of 1992, which deposited thick layers of silt and broke the sensitive ecosystem of the lake. The loss of lotus plants also impacted the livelihood of local farmers who had earlier sold lotus stems as part of their livelihood and trade.

Since 2020, the Wular Lake Management Authority has initiated a massive desilting and restoration drive, extracting more than 7.9 million cubic meters of silt and sowing lotus seeds in the dredged section. The process has re-established water flow, enhanced water quality, and facilitated the regrowth of submerged roots of lotus plants.

Environmental and Social Impact

Lotus flowering is more than an aesthetic pleasure; it's an ecological triumph that indicates wetland health and diversity on the rise. The lotus supports the lake ecosystem by nourishing aquatic organisms, steadying the ecosystem.

Conservationists and regulators are working to maintain this fragile turnaround by curtailing pollution, waste control, and preventing new siltation.
