Yellow Line to Induct Fourth Train Set by Mid-September, Frequency to Improve for Bengaluru Commuters

Commuters on Bengaluru’s bustling Yellow Line of the Namma Metro are set to experience significant relief soon with the induction of a fourth train set by mid-September 2025. Currently operating with three train sets, the Yellow Line—a crucial 19.15 km elevated corridor connecting RV Road (Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road) to Bommasandra via Electronic City—has been grappling with peak-hour overcrowding and longer wait times. The addition of the fourth train aims to ease congestion and improve service frequency.

The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has confirmed that the fourth train set, manufactured by Titagarh Rail Systems in collaboration with China-based CRRC Nanjing, arrived last month and is currently undergoing mandatory mainline testing.

 

The trial runs include covering at least 750 km on the network during non-revenue service hours to ensure safety and operational readiness before its commercial launch.

 

BMRCL officials anticipate completion of testing and the train’s deployment for passenger service by the second week of September 2025.

 

This induction will gradually reduce the interval between trains on the Yellow Line from the current 25 minutes to approximately 20 minutes.

 

Current Operational Challenges

 

The Yellow Line presently handles over 60,000 passengers daily with three train sets, resulting in overcrowding during peak times and inconvenience for regular commuters.

 

Unlike other metro lines in Bengaluru like the Purple and Green Lines that commence operations by 5 am, Yellow Line trains begin service later at around 6:30 am due to rolling stock limitations.

 

The stretched frequency leads to longer wait times, prompting BMRCL to install barricades and deploy additional security personnel, especially at busy interchange stations like RV Road.

 

Manufacturing and Supply Chain Bottlenecks

 

While the fourth train is near deployment, subsequent trainsets face delays due to bottlenecks in the supply of motorized bogies—complex assemblies essential for train movement and suspension.

 

CRRC Nanjing supplies these bogies to Titagarh Rail Systems under an agreement, but recent delays have caused a projected 2-3 week setback for the production of the sixth trainset.

 

Local Member of Parliament Tejasvi Surya has publicly urged the authorities to airfreight bogies for at least two trainsets to avert a longer delay of up to 45 days.

 

He stressed that expediting deliveries is crucial not only to improve commuter experience but also to enhance revenue for the transit corporation.
