Bengaluru Gets a British Upgrade: University of Liverpool to Open Doors in 2026

The University of Liverpool, a respected member of the UK's top Russell Group, will open its first international campus in Bengaluru, Karnataka, with operations starting in August 2026 and classes in September. This historic step is the first time a UK university will have a physical presence in India, a sign of the increasing pace of internationalization in India's higher education landscape.

Its Bengaluru campus will launch its Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses in Business Management, Accounting and Finance, Computer Science, Biomedical Sciences, and an innovative Game Design programme—making it the first UK university to launch this ground-breaking course in India.

The University received official sanction from the University Grants Commission (UGC), the announcement having been made in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who described the action as a milestone for India's global university associations.

The campus plans to admit a few hundred students in the first year, expanding to 10,000 students over the following ten years.

Curriculum and academic standards will be identical with that of the Liverpool home campus, guaranteeing internationally accredited qualifications and research-informed learning.

Global exchange programs, industry collaborations, and joint research will be opened up to students, tapping into the pre-existing connections of Liverpool with top Indian institutions like IISc Bengaluru and NIMHANS.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister M.B. Patil have assured complete cooperation, highlighting the state's focus on innovation and education.

The campus will be a center of cross-border collaboration, cultivating talent development and industry-academia links in fields such as technology, electronics, aerospace, and biotechnology.

The University of Liverpool's move comes after recent policy reforms under India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 that invite the best foreign universities to set up campuses in the country.
