The state has rolled out a pilot micro-irrigation project covering 25,000 hectares, primarily benefiting 20,000–25,000 sugarcane farmers, especially those with marginal holdings.

Plans are underway to expand micro-irrigation to all 3 million hectares of sugarcane fields, potentially impacting 5 million farmers.

Generous Subsidy Support

Marginal and small farmers receive up to 90% subsidy on drip irrigation equipment, while other categories get 80%.

The scheme is part of the broader “Per Drop More Crop” initiative, with direct benefit transfers ensuring transparency and quick disbursal.

Financing Remains a Bottleneck

Despite high subsidies, farmers still need to finance the remaining 10–20% of installation costs.

Over 185,000 farmers are currently seeking additional financial support to adopt micro-irrigation systems.

Development financial institutions, private banks, NBFCs, and microfinance organizations are being encouraged to step in and bridge this gap.

Innovative Financial Models

Collaborations with microfinance institutions and impact investors are emerging to provide affordable loans and credit access.

Special focus is on empowering women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) to facilitate credit and adoption.

Impact and Future Outlook

Micro-irrigation has already transformed nearly 30,000 hectares in drought-prone Bundelkhand, improving yields and water efficiency.

With over 160,000 farmers registered for new systems, the state is poised for a significant leap in climate-smart agriculture, provided financing challenges are addressed.
