Grounded by Politics? Mexican Space Agency Warns of Governance Storms Ahead

In a surprise move, Mexico's Space Agency (AEM) released a starkly worded warning regarding governance issues emanating from its merge into the newly created Agency of Digital Transformation and Telecommunications (ATDT). The change, part of President Claudia Sheinbaum's larger reshuffling of regulatory agencies, has raised alarms regarding the fate of Mexico's space program and its capacity to remain independent and innovative.

Dr. Salvador Landeros, past AEM director, stepped down earlier this year, citing a lack of funds and management oversight as primary concerns. He feared that the merger would water down AEM's mission and hamper Mexico's aspirations in space exploration. Despite government assurances that the agency is being "strengthened," critics contend that merging AEM into ATDT threatens to transform it into a political instrument instead of a scientific pioneer.

The risk of governance goes beyond financial constraints.
