Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Gujarat Sahakari Maha Sammelan 2025 in Ahmedabad, casting the spotlight on India's leadership as the United Nations has announced 2025 as the International Year of Cooperatives. Addressing a packed gathering, Shah sketched out an ambitious vision of reforms to rejuvenate and foster the nation's cooperative movement with a special focus on strengthening Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) and grassroots farmers.
Shah announced the government's vision to establish a PACS in every panchayat by 2029, which means over 2 lakh new dairies and PACS nationwide. He emphasized three pillars of cooperative development: embedding cooperation in governance, transparent governance employing technology, and people mobilization. Tribhuvan Sahakari University, the new one, was declared as a national center for learning cooperatives.
Shah urged cooperative institutions of all kinds to work very closely and open accounts in district cooperative banks, creating a robust, transparent, and inclusive cooperative ecosystem for a "Viksit Bharat."
